We design special hazards deluge fire protection systems for industrial equipment such as electrical transformers, reactors, phase angle regulators, fuel storage tanks, conveyors, process piping etc that requires protection as per NFPA 15.

A deluge system is a type of fire sprinkler system that uses open nozzles instead of temperature sensitive closed sprinklers. The system is activated by a fire detection system, usually heat detectors located in critical areas or a thermistor wire that runs around the equipment and by an independent manual releasing system.

The deluge system will simultaneously discharge significant amounts of water that would protect a high hazard area.

What separates us from other companies and why should you consider using our services

We do more than just design.

NFPA 15 offers prescription type solutions that are limited in their applicability. In more than 15 years since we perform this activity, we almost never encountered one real life situation where a designer can rely on NFPA 15 alone. Always an engineering decision had to be done.

For example in designing electrical transformer deluge system, a real challenge is the design of supports and choosing their locations. Static and dynamic forces due to piping dead weight and respectively water column thrust against the fittings must be carefully evaluated.

Supports must be structurally sound to withstand all these forces and therefore we do structural calculations for each support. Hilti anchors must also be calculated, wind loads must be evaluated, water pressures and velocities must be kept within certain limits. NFPA 15 requires the expertise of a professional engineer in designing systems that are beyond their relatively narrow prescriptive criteria, as most of real life situations are.

This is what we are – professional engineers – and this is our expertise – deluge system design.

Specialized experience

George Pavel worked for almost 7.5 years at the Consolidated Edison Company of New York City as a Senior Mechanical Designer specialized in designing fire protection systems for high hazard assets.

During this time frame period, he was involved and designed most of the projects within New York City and Westchester County area.

After leaving Con. Edison, George started his company where he provided expert design engineering or consulting services at various sites as a subcontractor for companies working for:

  • New York Power Authority
  • Kentucky LG&E
  • Exelon Corp.
  • Consolidated Edison of NYC

Economic, cost effective optimized systems

Deluge systems are calculated such that all the equipment’s outside surfaces will evenly receive the prescribed water flow density. Providing an uniform distribution and optimizing the system discharge is accomplished by fine balancing nozzle by nozzle and group by group such that the actual water discharge design density stays just above the NFPA 15 required density.

There is no need to provide more water to extinguish a fire than NFPA 15 standard is asking. The standard has its own safety factor built-in and any extra added water quantity is a waste. Besides the cost of water itself, a non-balanced, non-optimized system would require larger pumps, bigger pipes, larger oil/water separators etc, thus imposing unreasonable expenses to the customer.

Easy to install and visualize

Design is made in 3D and besides detailed shop drawings we will provide your construction team with any number of views and sections generated from our model to fully clarify every single detail. Also nozzles discharge pattern can be visualized in our drawings. We will provide you a detailed table with nozzles selections and their precise orientation, aiming and location.
